Super Chunky Mitten Pattern

I have perfected my new chunky mitten pattern! This is made in Women’s Size Medium. Here it goes…

· Stitch holder
· Blunt-end darning needle

Instructions:

Cast on 22 sts, work in K1 P1 ribbing for 12 rows.

Row 13 (Right Side) K2, *M1, K3; rep from * to last 3 sts, M1, K3 (29 sts)

Rows 14 to 20 Work in St st.

Row 21 K9, M1, K9, M1, Knit to end

Row 22 P9, M1, P11, M1, Purl to end

Row 23 K11, Place 10 sts on a holder, Knit to end

Rows 24 to 34 Work in St st. (for a longer mitten add more rows here)

Row 35 *K2tog, K3; rep from * to end

Row 36 Purl across

Row 37 *K2tog, K2; rep from * to end

Break yarn, thread through darning needle and thread through remaining stitches. Pull tight, fasten off. Sew side seam.

Thumb: Pick up the 10 sts from holder, work in St st for 5 rows (for a longer thumb add more rows here, no more than 2-3 though). Next row, *K2tog, rep from * to end (5 sts).

Break yarn, thread through darning needle and thread through remaining stitches. Pull tight, fasten off. Sew seam and weave in ends.

  1. Love these mittens! I started making these, but my gauge looks huge. I was wondering how big the ribbed cuff should measure? :)

  2. I love this! They're soooo warm, and they go really fast if you're using Wool Ease Thick and Quick. I tried using other wool, but they ended up having a lot of holes all over. I'm making these for all my friends for Christmas! Thanks!

  3. Very easy pattern and the mittens look great! I think next time I will switch to smaller needles maybe a 6.5mm, they are pretty big and really stretch. Also I think I will do a 2 by 2 ribbing for the cuff. Thanks great easy pattern!

  4. Knit these in the round and they will turn out ten billion times better. :). Saves time too, no pesky ugly seam either.

  5. Looks super easy! Exactly what I need since I hate working with DPNs! Can you tell me what's the size of the needles you're using? Thanks!

  7. These look perfect. My son has suddenly demanded mittens...an odd request I thought as he is in his twenties but I reckon this pattern will be ideal. Not sure what wool to use though as we don't have that one in England.

  8. I am making in the UK with King Cole lightweight chunky yarn, the mittens seem about the right size ( I am a M size for rubber washing up gloves etc.) using 8 mm needles as instructed, thanks for the great pattern x

  9. When trying to make row 13 I always end up with 2 stitches not 3. What am I doing wrong

  10. What a fabulous pattern! I just finished the first mitten and it is the perfect size for an adult. The only thing is that I end up with 27 stitches after completing Row 13 not 29 as the pattern states. It appears that there are 5 increases on Row 13 which would result in 27 stitches at the end. In any case I continued on (using 27 stitches) and the mitten came out great. Thank you for the pattern!

  13. These look great, am trying it now. However, do you have the same pattern but for children 7-10 years and for men also? Would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

  15. Just starting the pattern. I am a clutz about following patterns so I'm hoping to do this right, heh. A lady friend of mine lost her son. She asked for a pair of pink mittens and so I began them yesterday.

  16. I have only read the pattern, but it seems like there is 7 rows above the cuff before you even start the thumb gusset. This can't be right. The picture shows the thumb gusset starting near the cuff. What am I missing? Thanks!
